September 30th is the date I'm watching

That is the date that the old State Children's Health Insurance Program is set to expire. This is the plan that supports Peachcare in GA and similar programs across the nation.

President Bush plans to veto a bill to renew the program. According to the Los Angeles Times today, if he vetoes this bill 800,000 children will be without health insurance.

Bush accuses the renewal plan of expanding the coverage to middle class families instead of focusing on low-income families as originally planned.

The LA Times lists the average cost of family health insurance at $12000 a year. The SCHIP program was to cover families who make twice what's listed as the federal poverty level. This is approximately $40000 for a family of four. All of these figures are from the LA Times article.

I'm curious what $40000 for a family of four breaks down to on a daily basis, or a monthly basis. How much money is this per person? Is this middle class? I wonder what a family of four can buy a year---house-wise, education-wise, clothing-wise, and food-wise---on this amount of money. What if that family of four lives in an urban area with a higher cost of living?
